Hardwood Floor Refinishing Tips – How to Avoid Cloudy, White Stripes
Sometimes people tell me that they spend days or weeks refinishing an older hardwood floor, only to find that there are now cloudy or white stripes between the boards. It can be very frustrating, but it can be avoided. To begin with, it’s important to remember that older hardwood floors had decades of foot traffic and often weren’t been maintained with the proper floor care products. People sometimes use household cleansers or furniture polish, even though neither of those products are meant to be used on hardwood floors. If any of that residue was left on the floor after preparations were made, the new floor coating could cause it to turn cloudy or white, regardless of whether the new coating was oil or water based. To avoid such a situation, make sure to use the proper grit of sandpaper and the correct procedure for using it. Start with a coarse sandpaper, then switch to medium, followed by a fine grit, to make sure you’re getting all the residue off the floor. Just because it appears as if the floor is clean after the first or second step doesn’t mean you should ever skip a step. If you do, you may run into costly and time-consuming problems later, because you’ll have to start all over again and do it right, removing all contaminants completely by thoroughly sanding with all three grits of paper. Also spend time preparing the floor in between each successive coat of new finish, which will help the coats adhere better and look nicer. Many future problems can be avoided by taking your time in between coats to make sure you’re doing it all right. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on preparing the floor between coats, which will often include light sanding and buffing with an abrasive pad or screen. There are some refinishing products that can be coated without padding or screening, while other require extra long drying times between coats. Read the instructions carefully–and then follow them to the letter. Letting coats dry can be critical, because even though the main boards may be dry, the seams between the boards may still be wet. Pay special attention to the seams, bearing in mind that cloudiness or whiteness may not appear until after the second or third coat, at which time it will be too late to do anything about it. Kitchen Remodeling Tips
The only thing that delays most people from having the kitchen of their dreams is the potential cost; the costs for that dream can, unfortunately, often put a hold on this type of project. If you have been delaying your improvements because the kitchen remodeling costs will stretch your budget then you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that it may just be possible. You might dream of having a kitchen with a flat top grill like those used by professionals, but let’s face it – most of us, if not all of us, have to keep costs down.
It may take a little more effort on your part but you might be able to improve this room close to how you would like it to be, even though you will be working to a budget. With some careful planning, you should be able to bring your kitchen costs down to a level you can afford comfortably.
Initially, you need to consider what work you can carry out yourself and what you cannot, as labor charges in work of this nature will increase the costs and decide the issue for you one way or the other. Reducing the kitchen remodeling costs comes down to planning because work you can carry out yourself will reduce the financial burden but you have to be careful otherwise mistakes will happen.
It should also go without saying that you need to be comfortable using tools and not afraid to get your hands dirty because if you aren’t then the chances of you completing this project are small. Whilst it may look very good on paper, if you are not able to do this but try anyway, the chances are you will have to pay a kitchen fitter to rectify your mistakes before they can complete the work.
With prices that can range from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, kitchen remodeling costs need to be planned carefully, so if you buy direct there will be savings to make. If you can buy this equipment used or second hand, you can save even more money.
You will also be surprised just what you can find by looking locally in papers and classified advertisements because used or nearly new kitchen equipment is often available. Kitchen remodeling costs can also be reduced by purchasing used equipment removed on other projects.
One of the best things about getting this secondhand equipment is that it might allow you to create a kitchen you would only have dreamt of before. The only factor you need to consider that will make your kitchen remodeling dream a reality is which jobs you’re able to complete yourself and those where you will need a professional tradesman.
What Is Xenon (HID) Light?
Xenon light is a relatively new technology in lighting, proving to be brighter than most artificial lighting, including halogen, and even more cost- and energy-efficient, as well. Xenon light produces five times more light than Halogen lights, and lasts even ten times longer. It has now replaced Halogen bulbs in automobile headlights.
It is preferred because the transition border between light and darkness of Xenon light is more defined than Halogen light, therefore there is much less light reflected from the headlights of an oncoming car using these bulbs and the glare doesn’t disturb the drivers – unless they look directly at the light. This may only occur because drivers may not be accustomed yet to such bright, yet controlled, headlights. But they soon will be.
How does Xenon light work?
The micro-discharge bulb is full of noble gases, of course including Xenon, and is unlike normal incandescent bulbs in that it does not have any filaments. Instead, it lights up when an arc is created between two electrodes of tungsten metal. Also called High Intensity Discharge lamps, or HID, Xenon light also comes with an electronic starter and a ballast to start up and maintain this arc and the resulting light.
The ballast is important as it converts and manages the high energy that fills and supplies the bulbs with energy. The ballast also controls the flow of energy. Its built in tracking system regulates the energy levels and automatically shuts off when voltage threatens to escalate beyond acceptable levels. This ensures that the bulbs do not suddenly explode.
Where can you use Xenon lighting?
The light given off by Xenon bulbs is cooler in color temperature than an incandescent bulb, yet warmer than a halogen bulb. Xenon bulbs actually emit light that is close to the brightness of the noon sun, which is why these bulbs are used for indoor gardens and greenhouses.
Xenon lights were originally used for large areas that needed adequate lighting, such as gyms and indoor basketball courts, warehouses, parking lots, and movie houses. As the lighting system has been developed, lighting was adapted for cars, greenhouses, indoor aquarium systems with fish that needed “tropical lighting,” and even on airplanes as landing and taxi lights. HID lights are often used in agricultural, marine and mining industries, as well in construction sites and on highways.
These bulbs are now being used for the home, and not just to flood your garage with light when you come home, or for use only in the garden and the kitchen. They can be used for desk lamps in studies, spotlighting for paintings, book cases, and to light up staircases and cabinets.
A disadvantage to the bulbs is that they are usually expensive, much more so than your regular bulb. However, if you calculate how many incandescent, fluorescent and/or halogen bulbs that match the durability and brightness of one bulb, you’ll find that it’s not as expensive as it first seemed, and may even save you a lot in the long run.
There are Halogen bulbs currently available in the market that have Xenon gas in them. This is not the same as Xenon HID bulbs, and will not save you money. Still basically Halogen bulbs, the light they give off is not as strong as HID bulbs, and will take even more power to operate them, resulting in more used up electricity. Make sure your bulbs are labeled “High Intensity Discharge” to get the full benefits of true Xenon light
Home Improvement Projects – Redoing the Kitchen
One of the largest home improvement projects that many home owners will take on is that if redoing their kitchen. Why is it so costly to do this project? There are a number of reasons and they all start with the expense of labor. Hiring someone to come in and handle this project is a large cost factor. Yet, it may be necessary unless you have done this type of work before. In most cases, the cost of labor is well worth the investment, assuming that you know who you are working with and do your homework.
Should You Hire Someone?
The first thing for you to do is to consider hiring on a contractor to handle your home improvement project. You will want to invest in this process wisely, so, to do that, ask these questions.
o Do you have the skill to design and implement a new kitchen? This will include gas line work, electrical work, plumbing work, as well as carpentry skills.
o Each piece of the puzzle of the kitchen must be fitted together. Will you really be diligent enough to handle all of the small details of this project?
o Being without a kitchen is a huge problem for most homeowners. Will you be able to invest enough time in getting the kitchen complete to make sure this does not become a huge problem for you?
o Do you have the funds to back up any mistakes that you make? A contractor will handle his own mistakes, but if it is your fault, you’ll need to cover it.
In addition, consider the skill level and speed that your kitchen can be done with the right help. If you are doing it in your spare time, it may take a year or more. This is costly to a family without a doubt.
What To Look For
Yet, even if you do hire someone, not everyone will be a benefit to you. Consider these things:
o What is the experience level that they have?
o Do they have the cost effectiveness that you need and the guarantee?
o What do their past customers have to say about them?
Redoing your kitchen is an investment in your home well worth doing if you do it with the right help. Take the time necessary to make that happen so that you do not regret it later.
